Cavea : Cavea : le théatre romain de Skikda

S'inspirant des théâtres grecs construits en pierres de taille et creusés dans le flanc d'une colline, Le théâtres de Russicada construit en hauteurs de l'oued et orienté selon une direction nord-est, est le plus grand et le plus vaste de tous ceux construits par le Romains en Afrique du nord. Ce monument occupait, avant sa destruction lors de l'occupation française, environ 4900 m2. De la scène qui disparu, il ne reste que les substructures des gradins. La largeur maximale du théâtre était de 82m. De ces dimensions il pouvait accueillir prés de 6 000 spectateurs, de loin plus que les théâtres de Calama(Guelma) et Tamughadi(Timgad). Conçus selon le même plan inspiré des grecs, le théâtre antique de Russicade est de forme semi-circulaire avec des gradins menant de la scène à des structures supérieures en forme d'arcs immenses soutenus par des gigantesques colonnes.


Les gradins sont constitués de «Cavea» terme qui signifie «Creux». Dans le cas du théâtre de Russicade, la «Cavea» fut aménagée sur le flanc de la colline de bouyala-seb's Ebiar. Seules les portiques d'accès du publique (entrées) entourant la Cavea sont élevées par rapport au sol. Les meilleures places du théâtre sont situées dans la partie basse, proche de la scène. Elle est dite «Limina Cavea» et est réservée aux notables et aux personnalités de haut rang. La partie médiane est appelée « Media Cavea» et est destinée aux personnes du rang social moyen. Enfin, au commun des mortels, il est réservé la partie la plus élevée des gradins, à savoir la «Summa Cavea». Le «Postscaenium» est un espace se trouvant derrière le mur de scène et qui permettait l'accès sur scène des comédiens à travers une ouverture pratiquée dans le mur.
