Si en Europe nous célébrons un moment historique pour la liberté retrouvé, elle n'a pas meme signification en Algérie , car ele est la date d'une tuerie sanglante qui cimenta les esprits pour retrouver leur liberté aussi. Suite à ces représailles qualifiés ainsi à l'époque une vague d'indignation s'empara des Algériens .
Le Massacre fera officiellement 1500 morts et du côté français 102 tués .Des rapports américains et des historiens français parlent de 8.000 à 20.000 morts . Les autorités Algériennes parlent de 45.000 morts
Mr Henri Aboulker médecin juif et résistant, s'élèva contre ces massacres et publie plusieurs articles dans le quotidien Alger républicain.
Rappelons que le Plan Marshall prévoyait l'indépendance de l'Algérie. Longtemps ce fait hsitorique douloureux resta dans les oubliettes. Mais reste jamais à graver dans l'ame algérienne.
Il faut attendre le 27 février 2005 pour que, lors d'une visite à Sétif, Hubert Colin de Verdière, ambassadeur de France à Alger, qualifie les « massacres du 8 mai 1945 » de « tragédie inexcusable ».
