Cherchell: la magnifique phénicienne

La ville au 2500 ans d'histoire. Colonie phénicienne de Lol, fondée vers le IVe s. av. J.-C.; Juba II, prince numide élevé à Rome, époux de Cléopâtre Sélèné, fille d'Antoine et Cléopâtre, l'améliora sous le nom de Caesara, en l'honneur d'Auguste. Ptolémée, fils de Juba II assassiné à Lyon sur l'ordre de Caligula, en +40, ce royaume fut réuni à l'empire romain. Pour atteindre le petit port de Cherchell il faut parcourir 100 km à l'Ouest d'Alger en longeant la côte littorale.A l'époque romaine la ville avait pris le nom de Juliae Caesaréa. Elle existait déjà au IVème siècle avant J-C et s'appelait Iol. C'était un comptoir phénicien. Après l'époque carthaginoise, elle devint le centre de la Maurétanie Césarienne et son rayonnement s'accrut. Sa population fut estimée à 100 000 personnes à l'époque de Juba II, souverain indigène. "Juba nous intéresse comme le personnage le plus représentatif de son époque et de sa patrie. Il symbolise la merveille ce que fut l'Afrique sous la domination romaine". Le site de collines, très verdoyantes, de Cherchell, sa position en surplomb sur la Méditerranée, son petit port surtout destiné à la pêche et au cabotage. Les thermes -bains publics- sont parmi les édifices les plus caractéristiques des villes romaines. Chaque cité en possédait un grand nombre car les thermes ne sont pas seulement des bains, mais aussi un lieu ou, vers la fin de l'après-midi, on venait se détendre et se délasser, bavarder, parler d'affaires; en somme comme les thermes jouaient , dans la vie quotidienne des Romains et des populations romanisées, le même rôle que les cafés et les clubs aujourd'hui. Cherchell possédait de nombreux thermes; on en a retrouvé des traces par exemple vers le centre de la ville antique, au Nord du théâtre. Plusieurs salles (salles froides, salles tièdes et salles chaudes) sont pavées de mosaïques, Les nombreux objets : chapiteaux, fûts de colonnes, corniches, dédicaces, sarcophages, fragments de marbre, de statues de calcaire, de terre cuite, qui y sont exposés proviennent de fouilles pratiquées à Cherchell ou dans labanlieue ; ils ont été apportés là pour ne pas encombrer le Musée, pour lequel les Thermes servent en quelque sorte d'annexe.

و مهدت عدة غرف ( غرف التبريد وغرف دافئة وغرف الساخنة) مع الفسيفساء ، و العديد من الكائنات : العواصم، والأفاريز ، إهداء ، توابيت ، التي يتعرض لها شظايا من الرخام وتماثيل من الحجر الجيري والطين ، ومهاوي من الأعمدة تأتي من الحفريات في شرشال أو labanlieue نقلوا هناك حتى لا تفرط في المتحف ، حيث تعلق الحمامات بطريقة أو بأخرى.
